Why Parkrun is great for everyone

When I first started my Parkrun journey, I have to admit it was a little challenging getting up early on a Saturday morning for a 9am run but I quickly became used to it and always look forward to it. Every time I have completed a Parkrun it has been amazing! Read on to learn more about parkrun and why it’s great for everyone of all running abilities...

What is Parkrun?

Parkrun isn’t just any run in the park, it is a series of free weekly timed, volunteer-led runs for all ages and abilities. There is no time limit and no one finishes last! Parkrun began back in 2004 in Bushy Park, London by Philip Sinton-Hewitt CBE with just 13 runners. Parkrun now has over 3 million members (aka parkrunners) and takes place globally each Saturday and Sunday in over 20 countries. It initially started as a running event but now has the aim of creating a healthier and happier planet and also to positively impact everyone’s mental wellbeing.

How to sign up to Parkrun?

It’s super easy to sign up to Parkrun, simply head over to Parkrun’s website to register https://www.parkrun.org.uk/register/ and fill in your details and once registered you can print your Parkrun barcode or purchase Parkrun specific merch such as wristbands or water bottles with your barcode printed on it.

What is the format of Parkrun?

Each week when you turn up and take part (whenever or wherever you want), just make sure you 'don’t forget your barcode' (DFYB) as this will be scanned at the end of your run along with another parkrun code so you can track your results on the parkrun website.

What are Parkrun Milestones?

There are four key milestones based on the number of runs you’ve completed - 25 (volunteering), 50, 100, 250 and 500 and officially recorded your Parkruns (don’t be like me and forget your barcode!). I haven’t quite hit my 50 yet but hope to get there soon. Pro:Direct running supplies milestone t-shirts once members have hit these milestones.

How to Volunteering at Parkrun

As mentioned above parkrun is volunteer led, I’ve volunteered before and found it just as rewarding as taking part. Seeing everyone of all levels to seasoned pros, their running tactics and just the smiles on their faces is very rewarding!

Usually there is a volunteer rota that gets circulated round or you can let the run directors know you'd like to volunteer. Once signed up you just need to turn up a little early to help set up, go to your volunteer post and help cheer and encourage your fellow parkrunners.

What are the benefits of parkrun?

I love Parkrun because it’s a great way to kick start the weekend. There’s nothing quite like fresh air, being out in nature, endorphins pumping and feeling truly energised at the start of your weekend.

Did I mention it's free? This helps limit restrictions on people taking part as signing up for races can be expensive and adds up...

Let’s not forget the great sense of community which parkrun provides by allowing everyone of all running levels to take part - there are always lots of friendly familiar faces each week.

Additionally, it's always good fun to try and beat your Parkrun PB and sometimes there are pacemakers to help with this but it’s not just about the time, just getting out there and getting that clarity which running provides is amazing.

Pleased to say as well that the more Parkruns I've completed the better I become at running - it has helped me learn how to pace myself better when running.

Lastly, my local parkrun is a good way to discover other up and coming races as members usually share details of up and coming and local races. For instance, my local parkrun was where I discovered cancer research tough 10 trial run (still gutted this race is no longer being held...).

Fancy joining parkrun? You can find an event near you here and if you’ve tried Parkrun before let me know in the comment section.

Thanks for stopping by!
